Ohio lawmakers should take up Secretary of State Frank LaRose's request to make voter registration automatic. It’s the best way to ensure that any Ohioan who wants to participate in an election will be eligible to vote, and that should be the goal of our election system.
Under the proposal, when Ohioans interact with any state agency — such as to pay taxes, renew a driver’s license or buy a fishing license — they also would be registered to vote or have their registration updated, unless they opt out.
Currently, state employees are supposed to offer people in such circumstances the opportunity to register or update their address, but it doesn’t happen unless the person fills out the form. It also is likely that not every agency makes the offer consistently.
