Education and Testing Information and Authorized Providers
Applications for notary public commissions, renewals, online authorizations and online authorization renewals require education and/or testing. The Secretary of State has approved the authorized providers listed below to administer the education program and test, when required. Applicants must directly contact and pay the required fee to the authorized provider for the education and/or testing required (see chart below for details). The authorized provider will provide a certification upon the completion of the required education and testing which the applicant must submit with the application to the Secretary of State. Renewal applicants may complete the one-hour education class up to 12 months prior to the expiration of their commission and the education certificate will be valid upon filing the renewal application no earlier than three months prior to the expiration of the commission.
Note: Non-attorneys are required to submit a criminal records check when applying for a commission or a renewal. Applicants should obtain the criminal records check prior to completing the education and test to ensure there are no reports of a disqualifying offense, which would prohibit the applicant from obtaining or renewing a commission. Fees paid to the authorized provider are non-refundable even if the commission or renewal application is rejected by the Secretary of State.
