Special Police Officer Commissions
The Ohio Secretary of State’s office has the authority to appoint and commission special police officers. The commission term is three years, unless revoked.
Under Ohio law (R.C. 4973.17), the following companies may apply:
banks, savings & loan associations, saving banks, and credit unions
railroad companies
companies under contract with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for the construction or operation of a plant
hospitals
amusement parks
To apply, complete and submit an application form and pay a $15 fee.
Records
The Secretary of State’s office maintains a database of individuals commissioned as special police officers, including:
Special police officer’s name
Commission number
Commission and expiration dates
Company type, address, and county
