The Spicy Lamb Farm

Ohio has always been a leader in raising sheep, and today our state is still the largest sheep producing state east of the Mississippi. American lamb is only meeting half of the demand for lamb so there is much need to grow our flocks. Lamb is healthy source of protein and is more tender, flavorful and juicy than any other meats, and our cities have the gourmet chefs to prepare the fine dishes.

The Spicy Lamb Farm is located in Peninsula, Ohio in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP). The base of the operation is a flock of production poll Dorset ewes. In addition to the sheep, duck is being raised along with organic varieties of apples, pears, and plums, and spicy herbs and vegetables. Gourmet lamb and duck, fruit, and spices are sold off the farm. Wool blankets, yarns, roving, and fiber crafts are available at the farm and the Yellow Creek Trading Company in Peninsula.

The farm welcomes visitors for annual events such as the Cuyahoga Valley Sheep Dog Trials in October, as well as scheduled group tours and private rentals. There is a mystique about sheep that draws visitors to the farm. The flock certainly contributes to the beauty of the countryside in the CVNP.

The farm also grazes off site and sells stock through Urban Shepherds, a nonprofit organization that is promoting urban and suburban sheep grazing as a cost-saving and environmental alternative to mowing.

The mission of the farm is to work an economically viable farm; to provide agritourism opportunities; and to educate the public on the critical need for local sustainable farming and environmental stewardship.
