WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT DOING BUSINESS IN OHIO?
That we are able to produce and sell maple syrup and maple products in Ohio. We don’t have to import our bulk goods, they are made from the maple trees right here in Ohio.
DESCRIPTION OF BUSINESS:
The business was established in 1910 with the marriage of Will & Rena Richards, beginning on a small farm just north of Chardon. At that time, maple was the "cheap sweetener,” white sugar was hard to come by and very expensive. Great Grandma and Grandpa would take maple syrup and two-pound blocks of maple sugar by wagon to the city to sell.
In 1936 and 1937, at the Great Lakes Exposition, Richards sold pancakes, maple syrup and other maple products. After the Exposition, they purchased those buildings, moved to Chardon, near the center of town, and used the buildings to build the store in which we remain today.
Running a year round maple business requires us to "think outside of the jug.” We sell Pure Maple Syrup, but we also produce maple candy and confections, and sell maple syrup making equipment. Our maple caramel corn, maple BBQ sauce, maple mustard, and new maple salad dressings have become quite popular. We are proud to be entering into our 105th year and look forward to many, many more.
