DESCRIPTION OF BUSINESS:
Carl and Fred Ballreich
In 1920, in Tiffin, Ohio, Fred Ballreich and his wife, Ethel, started their homemade potato chip operation in a dirt floor garage, using a copper kettle heated with wood scraps. This all-day process produced just 14 pounds of potato chips. Carl Ballreich and wife Emma immediately joined them to form Ballreich Brother's Potato Chips. Carl's strong work ethic and management skills, combined with Fred's sales and baking skills, insured the company was well on its way to success.
The Ballreich’s called their potato chips "Marcelled", which means "wavy", taken from the popular ladies' wavy hairstyle of the 1920's. Demand for the unique potato chip increased dramatically over the next 25 years.
After WWII, Carl’s son-in-law, Robert Reis, married to Carl's daughter Phyllis, his sons, Owen and Don, along with Fred's sons, Doyle and Nevin, all joined the growing family business. Incorporated into Ballreich Bros., Inc., the business grew steadily into a much larger operation at the same location.
Today, Carl’s grandson, Brian Reis and wife, Linda, own and manage the business. Daughter Haley Thomas and son Robert Reis II represent the fourth generation of family involvement.
As a full line snack company today, Ballreich’s receives orders from across the globe.
