Governor DeWine Selects March 19 for Primary and June 11 for General Election
COLUMBUS – Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced today a series of administrative deadlines to comply with a new special election set by Governor Mike DeWine for the pending vacancy in Ohio’s 6th Congressional District.
The announcement follows a formal resignation by United States Representative Bill Johnson on January 2, 2024, which becomes effective on January 21, 2024. Governor DeWine exercised his statutory authority to issue a Writ of Election directing the primary election to be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the same day as the previously scheduled statewide presidential primary election. The Governor ordered a general election for the seat to follow on June 11, 2024.
“The election schedule set by Governor DeWine will ensure Ohio can promptly fill this vacancy with minimum disruption both to local boards of elections and to the voters of the 6th Congressional District,” said LaRose. “Given the extraordinary demands placed on our boards of elections in a presidential year, a special election presents a challenge, but one that I am confident our hardworking elections officials will meet."
The Secretary of State’s office stands ready to assist voters and county boards of elections with any questions or concerns they may have and will issue further instructions to impacted county boards of elections in the coming days.
IMPORTANT DATES:
January 19:Declarations of Candidacy for partisan candidates and Declarations of Intent for write-in candidates must be filed by 4:00 p.m. with the Mahoning County Board of Elections
January 24:The Mahoning County Board of Elections must certify names of candidates that will appear on the March 19, 2024 ballot for the special primary.
January 26:Protests against partisan and write-in candidates must be filed with the Mahoning County Board of Elections by 4:00 p.m.
February 20:Deadline for voter registration for the March 19, 2024 presidential primary and special congressional election
February 21:Early voting begins for March 19, 2024
March 18:Nominating petitions of independent candidates for the June 11, 2024 special congressional election must be filed with the Mahoning County Board of Elections by 4:00 p.m.
March 19:Presidential Primary and Special Congressional Primary Election Day
May 13:Deadline for voter registration for the June 11, 2024 special congressional general election
May 14:Early voting begins for June 11, 2024
